Service Description: Process and Data Sources
The new updated Land-cover dataset was generated based on digital Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery, captured on the 28 November 2019. The Land-cover was generated at a spatial resolution of 10m, based on the equivalent resolution of the Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery. Initially a supervised classification approach was adopted to classify what is known as the “foundation” cover classes. These represent the basic building blocks associated with landscape characteristics and include water, bare ground and vegetation (grasslands, woody vegetation, wetland vegetation and alien vegetation) cover types. These foundation cover classes are considered “spectrally dependant”, since they are classified purely based on spectral characteristics associated with each pixel. Following from this, “spectral independent” classes were classified. These represent classes that needed to be identified by means other than or in addition to the spectral signatures. For example, the “bare ground” spectrally dependent class could include non-vegetated built-up urban areas, natural rock exposures or a mine pit and tailings dump. However, without additional information and user input, these classes cannot be distinguished.
